Students at Queen Elizabeth High School in Hexham are celebrating a strong set of A-Level results as they prepare to move into higher education, training and other next steps.
The school’s Sixth Form achieved an average grade of B across A-Level subjects, while students taking vocational qualifications achieved a Distinction. The results were described as an “excellent set of results” in the school’s results-day announcement.
Students heading for a wide range of destinations
QEHS said its students are now moving towards a broad range of future pathways. Eighteen students are going on to health-related careers, with destinations including medicine, physiotherapy, dietetics, and speech and language therapy.
More than 50 students have chosen courses in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, commonly grouped as STEM subjects. Other students are preparing to study music, drama and the visual arts.
The school said the range of destinations reflected the different ambitions and interests within the year group. It also highlighted opportunities beyond formal qualifications, including sport, leadership and volunteering.
Head of sixth form praises students’ wider achievements
Ruth Platts, head of sixth form at QEHS, said the results were a reflection of students’ “hard work and determination”, as well as their engagement with wider opportunities.
“We are incredibly proud of all of our students. These results reflect not only their hard work and determination, but also how they have embraced the wider opportunities available to them, such as sport, leadership and volunteering.”
Ms Platts said results day should not be viewed solely as a measure of grades. She said it marked the point at which young people begin their next stage “with confidence and ambition”.
“Today is about much more than grades. It is about young people taking their next steps with confidence and ambition. We are delighted to see students moving on to a wide range of exciting destinations and we look forward to seeing all they achieve in the years ahead.”
She added that the school community was proud of every student, regardless of the route they had chosen after sixth form.
“They leave us as capable, thoughtful and resilient young adults, and it has been a privilege to be part of their journey.”
