A strong entry of 1,261 store lambs and ewes was sold at St Johns Chapel Auction Mart, with prices averaging £112.12 across the sale. The sale was held on a Thursday because several local shows were taking place on the Saturday.
The market report from Hexham and Northern Marts news said the sale included eight first-time vendors marketing stock at St Johns Chapel. A quality Beltex-cross lamb from N Demuschamp of Park View led the bidding at £158, with other lambs from the same vendor making £151 and £135.
Top prices across the sale
T & D I Allen & Son of Chatterley sold Texel-cross lambs at £144 and £140, as well as 14 powerful Suffolks at £140. R M Hooper of Brockersgill, making a first trip to St Johns, reached £140 before selling 24 lambs at £133.
Suffolk-cross lambs from J L Archer of Whitehill reached £138 for a run of 19, while a further 15 Mule lambs from the same holding made £130. J M & K Robinson of Ling Riggs brought 139 Texel-cross lambs, reaching £131 for a pen of 45 and averaging £119.43.
The report described the Mule offering as strong, averaging £113.49. T W Vickers of Thornley Hall sold a pen at £126, while P D & J Johnson of Herdship, another first-time vendor, sold 24 quality Mules at £124.
More lambs sought for next sale
Other notable Mule prices included £121 from R Collingwood of Stewartshield Meadows and £118 for 45 lambs from W Morley & Son of Warden Hill. Swale lambs reached £74 from Hudgill Rigg and £70 from D Collingwood of Intake.
Cheviot lambs reached £110 from W Burton of West Common Top. The leading ewe prices included £160 for Texel Cross from Burn House, £152 for Blue Texel from Park View and £134 for Cheviot Cross from Herdship Farm.
