Students from Queen Elizabeth High School Rowing Club in Hexham are preparing for an ambitious fundraising challenge at Tyne Green: rowing a combined 500km in three hours to help pay for a new boat.
The event is scheduled for September 5 at the club’s Tyne Green base, with the challenge beginning at 9.30am. The club has invited members of the public to attend and support the students during the attempt.
Why the club is raising money
QEHS Rowing Club is aiming to raise £16,000 for a new boat. Organisers say the funding would help the club respond to growing demand and make it possible for more students to access rowing.
The club has operated since the 1980s and is entirely self-funded. Its equipment and opportunities are supported through donations and help from the wider community.
Building the future of rowing at QEHS
Head coach Pam Walton said the value of rowing extends beyond competition, highlighting the confidence and resilience young people can develop through the sport.
“Rowing is about so much more than competition,” said head coach Pam Walton. “It gives young people the opportunity to build confidence, develop resilience and discover what they are capable of. “This challenge is about bringing our community together and helping secure the future of rowing at QEHS Rowing Club.”
The 500km target is intended to turn the club’s fundraising appeal into a community event, giving local supporters the chance to see students taking part while helping secure new equipment for the club.
QEHS Rowing Club’s appeal is focused on meeting the cost of the boat and supporting continued participation as interest in the sport grows.
