Cogito Books, the much-loved independent bookshop on St Mary’s Chare in Hexham, has been put up for sale as it enters its 25th year. The shop will continue trading as usual while owner Claire Grint looks for someone to take on the business.
Founded in 2001 by Grint’s father and stepmother, Cogito has built a reputation around its wide-ranging selection of books, book groups and personalised recommendations. It has continued serving the Hexham community for a quarter of a century, developing a role that extends beyond simply selling books.
A family business with deep Hexham roots
Grint has been involved with Cogito since May 2001, initially working part-time during university holidays before joining the shop full-time after graduating. She bought the business in 2012 when her father retired and has continued its work ever since.
Reflecting on the shop’s history, Grint said: “Throughout the past 25 years, we have worked hard to build and maintain Cogito's excellent reputation.”
She described the business as “thriving” and Hexham as a “bustling hub of activity”, presenting the sale as an opportunity for someone who wants to pursue independent bookselling.
Grint also said: “I'm immensely proud of Cogito, what it stands for, and the service we offer; it is truly an honour to serve and be part of this wonderful community of readers.”
She added: “To run a successful business with social values at its core, that brings people together through books and reading is very special.”
Shop will remain open during search for buyer
There is no immediate change for customers. Cogito Books will retain its existing opening hours and continue running its book groups and personal book consultations. Customers will still be able to place orders, while new releases will continue to be added to the shelves.
Grint remains committed to the shop until a new owner is found. She said: “Until a new owner begins their own bookselling journey with Cogito, I'll be continuing to run this fantastic bookshop with love and commitment.”
She also reassured customers: “We'll be here to give customers a warm Cogito welcome.”
Owner plans next chapter
Grint is preparing for a change of direction after the sale, with plans that include travelling, trekking, carrying out a major house renovation and developing a woodland. Until the business changes hands, however, she will continue overseeing the shop.
