Patients at a Hexham GP surgery have rated their experience significantly higher than regional and national averages after inspectors gave the practice an overall ‘Good’ rating.

The Sele Medical Practice, based at Hexham Primary Care Centre on Corbridge Road, was assessed by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), which also awarded its responsiveness an ‘Outstanding’ rating. The findings were published on October 2 after a focused assessment.

The practice provides services to around 5,900 people. Inspectors rated it ‘Good’ for safety, effectiveness, caring and leadership, alongside the higher rating for responsiveness.

Patient experience above regional and national averages

According to the 2026 National GP Patient Survey, 93 per cent of respondents described their overall experience of the practice as good. The figure compares with an Integrated Care System average of 80 per cent and a national average of 77 per cent.

The CQC described the practice’s result as “significantly higher” than both comparison figures. The survey also found that every respondent said the reception and administrative team was helpful, compared with 85 per cent nationally.

A further 94 per cent said the healthcare professional they dealt with was good at treating them with care and concern.

What inspectors found at The Sele Medical Practice

Inspectors said the surgery had enough qualified and experienced staff. They also found that its facilities were clean and that equipment was appropriately maintained.

The regulator reported that staff treated patients with “kindness, empathy and compassion” and respected their privacy and dignity.

The CQC also highlighted work intended to help patients lead healthier lives. This includes smoking-cessation and weight-management support, cancer screening and a regular community running initiative.

Practice response

A spokesperson for The Sele Medical Practice said the team was “incredibly proud” to have maintained its overall ‘Good’ rating and to have been recognised as ‘Outstanding’ for responsiveness.

“This achievement reflects the dedication, compassion and hard work of our entire team.”

The spokesperson thanked staff, patients and the practice’s Patient Participation Group for their continued support and feedback.

The practice said it places a strong emphasis on continuity of care, building lasting relationships with patients and ensuring its services are accessible to everyone. It added that it remains committed to providing high-quality care for the whole community.
