Families in the Hexham constituency could access a new way to finance home energy improvements after MP Joe Morris welcomed the launch of the Government’s Warm Homes Loan Scheme.

The scheme is intended to help households overcome the upfront cost of installing clean-energy technology. Homeowners will be able to spread payments over time while potentially benefiting from lower energy bills.

What the scheme could cover

The measures covered include heat pumps, home batteries and solar panels. Installing the technology could save households up to £550 a year on energy bills, according to the announcement, with the possibility of greater savings through smart energy tariffs.

The scheme is available across the UK and is expected to support about 100,000 homes during its initial phase. It is therefore not limited to the Hexham constituency, although Mr Morris said it could help families in the communities he represents, including Whalton, Stannington and Ponteland.

Possible grants and next steps

Homeowners may be able to combine a Warm Homes Loan with existing Government support. This includes grants of up to £9,000 through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which could reduce the overall cost of installing clean-energy equipment.

Mr Morris said the policy would help households reduce their exposure to international gas prices and rising bills. He also linked the scheme to lower fossil-fuel dependence and wider energy security.

“These new loans will help more families cut their bills for good, keep more money in their pockets and reduce our dependence on expensive fossil fuels.”

The announcement does not state when individual applications will open, what interest rates will apply or which lenders will provide the loans. Households considering the scheme will need to check the detailed eligibility and application arrangements when they are published.
