Hallstile Bank in Hexham has reopened to traffic after more than 15 months of closure, restoring vehicle access following extensive disruption to the street.
The road was shut on 30 July 2025 after the chimney of the former Hexham Ex-Servicemen's Club collapsed. The incident damaged the neighbouring building occupied by Bob's Barbers and Project Escape.
Repairs brought prolonged closure
The closure remained in place while the damaged buildings were repaired and made safe. Scaffolding also restricted access to businesses on Hallstile Bank during the works.
The footpath fully reopened in October after the scaffolding was removed. Traders welcomed that progress after more than a year of disruption, but vehicles were still unable to use the road while the final stages of the work continued.
Northumberland County Council has now confirmed that the road has reopened. A council spokesperson said:
“We continue to welcome progress on this site, and can confirm Hallstile Bank is once again open to traffic.”
Businesses affected by the incident
The reopening is the latest major step towards normality for the street. Traders had previously reported reduced footfall and difficulties for customers trying to access the businesses after the collapse.
Bob's Barbers has since permanently relocated to St Mary's Chare. Project Escape, the other business named in connection with the damaged building, has remained closed since the incident.
