Drivers using the A69 near Hexham are facing a changed traffic picture after work was completed on the eastbound joint of Constantius Bridge over the River Tyne.
National Highways North East said the repair was completed on August 12 after issues were discovered with the bridge joints. The eastbound lane closure and temporary 50mph speed restriction have now been removed from that section of the bridge.
Westbound lane closure remains
The improvement is not yet a full end to the bridge restrictions. A lane closure remains on the westbound carriageway while National Highways reviews the “options and timescales” for replacing the affected westbound carriageway joint.
The agency has not yet confirmed when that replacement will take place. It said it would provide an update once the options and timescales had been confirmed.
What drivers need to know
Eastbound traffic can now use the section without the previous lane closure and 50mph restriction. Westbound drivers should continue to expect a lane closure at Constantius Bridge, which is near Hexham on the A69.
National Highways said: “A lane closure will remain in place on the westbound carriageway until we have been able to replace the affected bridge joint.” The agency also thanked drivers for their patience while work continues to address the issue.
